Four Directions
I believe that a significant amount
of our behavior can be classified by directional values
vectors.
—against
—towards
—away from
—contribute [coming soon]
While this meets a test for simple,
it might not meet the test of "no simpler".
However, in order to have shorthand
for explaining and interpreting our behavior, these
directional vectors or four movements can help us understand
the clues to a deeper, more sophisticated set of
"combinatorial effects”.
These
MetaSystems of
behavior, even though oversimplified by just four directions,
can be efficient, effective, and sustainable (EES)
approaches to creating dialogue around behavior.
When I combine the four directions
with motive systems and Gravesian/spiral value systems, I can
construct the following matrix for your use:
With —>BE –
Affiliation – Sacrifice of Self to Get Now
Against —>DO – Power – Express Self
to Get Now
Towards —>HAVE
– Achievement – Express Self, to Get Later
Away From —>BECOME
– Avoidance – Sacrifice of Self to Get Later
A 5th
Direction is emerging. Stay tuned for the addition of CONTRIBUTE…
Helpful Hint:
These directional values vectors
allow us to superimpose a significant amount of behavior into
these movements. We KNOW that each of us has several
movements occurring in various amounts at the same time,
making it somewhat difficult for the uniformed to know which
is means or ends.
However, with some training of how
to find the signal in the noise, each of us can
evaluate our own behavior, as well as the behavior of others,
and provide meaningful ways to discuss this behavior towards
many ends.
Action Step:
Notice "significant"
behavior — occurring routinely and in standard ways or
approaches — and see it through the four directions, noticing
the amount of movement that takes place in which direction.
Often this gives us insights to
deeper inborn characteristics, needs, and ends.
Usually we can formulate a
behavioral map of ourselves in particular contexts, under
particular conditions, where similar code is usually
generated. This then paints a picture of algorithmic
density and the direction or movement, most of us call
home base…where the greatest density of our values emerges.
