"The more hours per day Americans use
their strengths to do what they do best, the less stress,
worry, anger, and physical pain they report. Using strengths
frequently during the day also gives adults a boost in
positivity and energy." -Read

One argument I have about NOT differentiating between
strengths and talents is this:
Strengths = talent + Knowledge & Skills + use
(practice/experience)
However, that is not the rub for me.
What I have discovered over time in working with this model is
that strengths can often have negative consequences.
For instance, I have a strength in being loud (I could call
signals in front of 80k... my family was loud, I grew up loud,
it is a strength... However MOST of the time, this strength has
negative consequences, more so in a quiet culture like ph...i
notice this a lot because of the contrast, you raise your
voice, they think you are mad...)
So while we may be using our strengths more, we may not be
getting offsets like they say below because I don't think they
consider strengths to have negative components, and I have
found that limitations come DIRECTLY from strengths, either
their underply or overplay, so while you may be using your
strengths, you might not have stress, but you are a carrier,
fyi.
But you will notice, the boost in energy, what I refer too as
free energy generated by intrinsic energy, and more than
likely flow states and experiences are also a part of this
portfolio. |
Helpful Hint: Understand your talents and how
they develop into strengths, it could be that you have a
talent that through some means has become a strength with
negative consequences, and you can go BACK to the talent and
remake the strength, as it's a habit that has formed
naturally, and using the talent (reform through
talent-->intrinsic motivation) learn to express the talent in
a different way with positive consequences |
Action Step: Take some time to list your
strengths and their root talent, identify whether in general
your strengths generate positive and negative consequences and
how. Examine those that have negative consequences for
opportunities to rebuild the strength with your Inborn talent
into a portfolio of positive consequences. |
