Growth is taken to mean an increase in the size of an object
or a living being. ‘The lump as grown in size’ is an example
of its usage. Development is taken to mean an improvement in
the level of functioning. Read more: http://www.differencebetween.com/difference-between-growth-and-development
Growth usually refers to a noticeable increase in the size of
the organism or a specific part of the organism. It is usually
macroscopically apparent, i.e. you can observe it with a naked
eye. Development is a broader term then growth. Growth is a
type of development. Some developments do not correlate with
overall increase in size of the organism or its parts. For
example, during early human development (right after birth),
the neurons in the brain start to make critical connections,
which give later adult functions, such as vision. This is
considered as a DEVELOPEMENT, but it is usually not regarded
as growth, because 1) you can observe it without advanced
instrument 2) it doesn't cause increase of size of anything.

Growth means increase or addition in size, height, length or
weight and can be measured. Development means change in shape,
form or structure so as to improve in working or functioning.
Development implies certain qualitative changes or changes in
character leading to maturity of improvement in functioning.
Arms grow large but also they develop by undergoing certain
changes which equip them for better work.

Growth is defined as an increase in size; development is
defined as a progression toward maturity. growth could be
positive or negative but development is always positive.

Human growth is based on biological events that cause you to
grow physically that naturally occur during the early stages
of your life. Developmental growth, however, is the product of
psychological and social growth, emphasized byenvironmental
and individual behavioral factors, sometimes more simply
referred to as maturity. While both of these natural processes
are vastly different, both growth and development are closely
related steps in producing healthy adults.

Economic Growth is a narrower concept than economic
development. It is an increase in a country's real level of
national output which can be caused by an increase in the
quality of resources (by education etc.), increase in the
quantity of resources & improvements in technology or in
another way an increase in the value of goods and services
produced by every sector of the economy. Economic Growth can
be measured by an increase in a country's GDP (gross domestic
product).
Economic development is a normative concept i.e. it applies in
the context of people's sense of morality (right and wrong,
good and bad). The definition of economic development given by
Michael Todaro is an increase in living standards, improvement
in self-esteem needs and freedom from oppression as well as a
greater choice. The most accurate method of measuring
development is the Human Development Index which takes into
account the literacy rates & life expectancy which affect
productivity and could lead to Economic Growth. It also leads
to the creation of more opportunities in the sectors of
education, healthcare, employment and the conservation of the
environment. It implies an increase in the per capita income of
every citizen.

Growth mean increase in physical structure with reference to
age of an object while development means increasing of other
factors such as mental, social, and secondry sexual charactor
in an object at which we say person has some maturity.

"Economic Growth means more output and changes in the
technical and institutional arrangements. Growth not only
implies more output but also more efficiency and more inputs.
While Economic Development is a wider concept and it goes
beyond the changes in the structure of output and allocation
of inputs".

Leading American economist Herman Daly illustrates the
fundamental difference between growth and development by these
definitions:
-
Growth – the quantitative increase in size or
throughput of biophysical matter. Daly has argued economic
growth is based on the “limitless transformation of
natural capital into man-made capital”.
-
Development – the qualitative improvement in
economic welfare from increased quality of goods and
services as defined by their ability to increase human
well-being. This infers promoting increased economic
activity only insofar as it does not exceed the capacity
of the ecosystem to sustain it.

Development and growth are two words that are often spoken of
in similar contexts, but which hold very different meanings to
their credit. There are quite a few differences that make the
two words easily definable. For instance, growth is a
quantitative factor whereas development can be both
quantitative and qualitative.

Human growth deals with just the physical aspects of
development. Human development however includes not only human
growth but the psychological aspects. The easy way to remenber
the difference is: Human growth is getting bigger. Development
is becoming more efficient.

Growth is an increase in size; development is an increase in
capability.

Covey defines “effective” as a formula: the P/PC Balance. P
stands for production while PC stands for production
capability. Essentially, an effective individual must learn to
balance his mindset, focusing on the goal (the benefit of
productivity) while simultaneously staying committed to the
process necessary for achieving the goal (the continuous
development of capability). This represents a balance of
short-term and long-term thinking.

Helpful Hint:
Growth and Development are differentiated @F-L-O-W and must
be, as each holds a differential set of equations in
determining appropriate algorithms for scaffolding. Covey's
notion of P/PC has always stuck with me, as they are too
different streams describing growth, what is happening now
through productivity algorithms/models and development, what
is happening over time to shift the ability to produce in the
future. While it might be true that growth is quanity and
development is quality, that oversimpliifcation may be less
helpful, than understanding the role of growth, and the role
of development in the individual as well as collective

Action Step:
Find and identify what is growing, and what is developing in
you, from a view of your past, but also now, near and far.
Differentiate those into two simultaneous streams that are
weaving your personal experience. Design ways to scaffold
each, noticing how you are using the natural as well as the
recalibrated design to meet success requirements, for growth
and development intersubjectively. |
