Cognition

"It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it." Aristotle

Cognition plays a significant role in FLOW, whether it be conscious or unconscious, real or imagined, the mechanism and how the capability of participating, constructing, processing, feeling, categorizing, comparing, contrasting, or even debating are all artifacts of this mechanism.

cog·ni·tion/kägˈniSHən/

Noun:

  1. The mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses.
  2. A result of this; a perception, sensation, or intuition.

"In science, cognition refers to mental processes. These processes include attention, remembering, producing and understanding language, solving problems, and making decisions. Cognition is studied in various disciplines such as psychology, philosophy, linguistics, science and computer science. Usage of the term varies in different disciplines; for example in psychology and cognitive science, it usually refers to an information processing view of an individual's psychological functions. It is also used in a branch of social psychology called social cognition to explain attitudes, attribution and groups dynamics.

The term cognition (Latin: cognoscere, "to know", "to conceptualize" or "to recognize") refers to a faculty for the processing of information, applying knowledge, and changing preferences. Cognition, or cognitive processes, can be natural or artificial, conscious or unconscious. These processes are analyzed from different perspectives within different contexts..." Wikipedia

In FLOW, cognition is a set of tools that are like the cylinders of a cognitive engine.

Each has it's own cycle of "work" running, each is important in the recognition and regulation process, each is tethered to the transmission of maturation.

As the fuel of living is drawn into the epigenetic carburation, the cylinders filling with a rich mixture; compress--> providing the tensions needed for cognition to emerge the experience of being, doing, having and becoming.

Helpful Hint: In FLOW, cognition guides the maturation and development of Happiness, Success, and the tensions emerging out of design.
Action Step:

Write down all the simultaneous processes occurring at the same time in all senses, perception, and inbornness to create the cauldron of alchemy in cognition, you'll be amazed at why it's probably the most complex of all systems to grasp.

Comments: I feel it's important to mention the Santiago Theory of Cognition, to complete the ideas that have been helpful to me as the essence of cognition is not just the user-controlled functions, but the functions that also control the user. I've reserved a TPOV for the Santiago Theory, even if there are disagreements about it's usability in adult development.
