Attention

"Everyone knows what attention is. It is the taking possession by the mind, in clear and vivid form, of one out of what seem several simultaneously possible objects or trains of thought. Focalization, concentration, of consciousness are of its essence. It implies withdrawal from some things in order to deal effectively with others, and is a condition which has a real opposite in the confused, dazed, scatterbrained state which in French is called distraction, and Zerstreutheit in German." - William James, in his textbook Principles of Psychology

I spent 10 years doing a scholarly meta-analysis ofi leadership and out of that process emerged Generati, which is constructed from Attention, Intention, Capability, Alignment and Coaching. You might say it's my leadership manifesto at a meta level...in other words, leadership about leadership

Attention emerged as the most difficult construct, as you might imagine, from all of this work. My first book was on Attention... I've never published it, and probably won't. Over the 15 years of its existence, I have been in tension with attention as a meta construct-->realizing that it's a lot more than we think it is.

Attention is an investment, yet it's paid. Attention is the spotlight of our consciousness in a dark room. Attention is not...as well as is. I felt James quote was interesting as well, as it describes aspects of attention which many people disagree with it, and while i can understand the idea he seems to outline, attention for me is behavioral in many ways as well.

I believe we have the power to put "attention" on an object, and also be subject to attention, as it puts attention on us, through inbornness, as well as epigenesis, constructivism, and the intermingled engine of cognition.

In the model of generati, attention both references and emerges through something I call MITEAM, which stands for money, information, time, energy, attention, and motivation, as a set of constructs which pertebate, as well as create a tension environment, that provides artifacts of how attention emerges in an organism. While money is a difficult reach for bacteria, monetization may be abstract but critical for FLOW.

Helpful Hint: Learning how to use the resource environment differently is the key to FLOW, leverage, and compounding our strengths, as attention, for design, and the relaxing of the consumption attraction.
Action Step: Attention can mean many things, it's important to always define how you are using attention, as each context can represent different reality. One of the things you can do to play with attention, or at least to contrast it in a different way, is to complete the ROI of Attention Survey, as it gives significant data for designing FLOW, as a very PRACTICAL matter of attention. http://www.flawlessliving.info/attention
