Development for Leaders
Series II
1-Minute Daily
Day 6
TALENT
I still remember the moment when the aha came while riding my exercise bike in the small nook in the house I was staying in Nebraska — listening to Marcus Buckingham narrate NOW DISCOVER YOUR STRENGTHS.
Essentially TALENT has been brought forward as a very efficient way to describe your “go to” behavior patterns.
There are numerous books and I still recommend the first with the updated CLIFTON STRENGTHSFINDER, which is a quick way to get past go.
Identifying strengths is an economical way to understand Talent patterns in your design.
Patterns are usually ways in which your BEING, DOING, HAVING, BECOMING, and CONTRIBUTING become evident and reinforced — you might say “grooved” over time.
All of us come wired with “use it or lose it” pathways which emerge into our unique design of behavior.
If you don’t have your design, your design has you.
Talent is a big hammer that has us all looking for nails, as Maslow might say.
If you do only one thing now… discover your strengths.

PS: After two decades of talent work, my takeaway is that when I get into trouble, it’s because of my talents, and when I get out of trouble… it’s because of my talent.
The difference?
Self-knowledge and Self-Awareness.
